Neustadt an der Weinstraße – Wine, Enjoyment and Half-Timber Houses

Neustadt an der Weinstraße (oldest reference from 1245) with its nine wine villages lies in the south west of Germany, and is an ideal starting point for discovering the historical Electoral Palatinate (Kurpfalz) with Heidelberg, Speyer and the Alsace region.

Wine festivals are celebrated from spring to autumn in Germany's secret wine capital. A very special atmosphere: Schwarzrotgold – the Castle Street Festival, Haardt Wine Festival, and the Gimmelding Almond Blossom Festival. The highlight of the season is the German Wine Harvest Festival, with the crowning of the Palatinate and German Wine Queen.
The Gothic Collegiate Church, the city's landmark, towers over the historical old part of town, where there are more half-timbered houses than anywhere else in the Palatinate. The North Tower houses the biggest cast iron bell in the world. The weekly market held on the historical market place is said to be one of the most beautiful markets in the region. Famous attractions: Hambach Castle as the cradle of German democracy and the "Kuckucksbähnel" (Cuckoo Railway) steam train into romantic Elmstein Valley – with a museum pub-on-wheels to enjoy a glass of Palatinate wine... Plan now: Insider tip and new: Christmas Market of pleasure Kunigund Market on the four weekends before Christmas. Ideally in combination with the Christmas markets in Deidesheim, Heidelberg and Speyer.
