Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Heritage Directorate General

Rhineland-Palatinate has a lot to offer - its Cultural Heritage Directorate General shows you just how much! Monumental Roman buildings, medieval castles, historical stately homes and top-class state museums - experience the heartland of German culture and history.

Rhineland-Palatinate is a gate through which the significant European cultural eras have passed. Magnificent castles, churches and monasteries, picturesque Romantic buildings and Gründerzeit villas are to be found here. The eventful course of history has given Rhineland-Palatinate its beauty and appeal. It's not without reason that there are as many as four UNESCO World Heritage Sites here: the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Roman Monuments, Trier Cathedral and Liebfrauenkirche, Upper Germanic & Rhaetian Limes and Speyer Cathedral.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Heritage Directorate General administrates the state-owned properties, including ancient Roman buildings such as Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre and the thermal baths at Trier Viehmarkt, the heart of ancient Germany, Middle Rhine castles such as Burg Sooneck, Pfalzgrafenstein and Stolzenfels Castle, Hardenburg, Trifels and Villa Ludwigshöhe Castle in the Palatinate, Bürresheim Castle in Mayen and the Prussian stronghold of Ehrenbreitstein in Coblenz. First-class exhibits can be seen in the state museums in Mainz, Coblenz and Trier. The Directors are responsible for preserving and caring for the cultural heritage of Rhineland Palatinate entrusted to them and for maintaining it for future generations. The monuments are also being presented as cultural and tourist attractions.
