Of Roman imperial cathedrals along the Rhine...

The wonderful trio of Romanesque imperial cathedrals on the Rhine - St. Martin's Cathedral in Mainz, St. Peter's Cathedral in Worms and Speyer Cathedral - are magnificent reminders of the splendours of early medieval German architecture.

Cathedrals are truly breathtaking - miracles in stone, all with amazing architecture, a wealth of history and plenty of fascinating stories waiting to be discovered. Take time to appreciate their calming atmosphere, soothing tranquillity and solemn grandeur.

Mainz Cathedral, which has a number of important tombs, has defined the city's skyline for over 1,000 years. One of the cathedral's main attractions is the Lady Altar in the Ketteler Chapel with the "schöne Mainzerin" (beautiful lady of Mainz).

In Worms, the town of the Nibelungen saga, your itinerary includes a visit to St. Peter's Cathedral. In the 11th century, when the cathedral's foundation stone was laid by Bishop Burchard, the Salian emperors ruled the Holy Roman Empire and Worms was their ancestral seat. The imperial cathedral, which still towers over the roofs of Worms and can be seen from far and wide, is affectionately known as the city's "crown".

Speyer Cathedral, which was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1981, is a prime example of German Romanesque architecture. Founded by Emperor Konrad II before 1030, it is still the city's main landmark and can be seen for miles around. The crypt, where eight German emperors and kings are buried, is of particular importance.

As well as admiring these architectural miracles, you will also have plenty of opportunity to rest and relax. The Romance & Religion package, which Mainz, Worms and Speyer have put together, features attractive, specially selected hotels, guided tours, information packs and a small gift.
